Competition

Gloucestershire U16 Team Tennis

Having been clear winners of Group B in the U16 Division 1, on Sunday 17th June Lechlade were faced with a tight semi-final against the Group B second place team, away, to Cirencester.

This time of year is notoriously difficult for the U16 team owing to GCSE commitments, however, we have fielded complete teams for each fixture by using a couple of the U14 team members.

It was decided that all of the boys who had contributed to getting the team as far as the semi finals should be offered the chance to participate, and to gain the experience of playing on Cirencester's new clay courts.  With five of the original contributors available, Luke Thomas, Jed Deo, James Rose and Thomas Green were nominated to compete in the singles rubbers.

After some very close games - and whether or not the unfamiliar surface was a factor - at the halfway stage, Lechlade and Cirencester were drawn on 2 rubbers each with Jed and Thomas coming out victorious against their respective counterparts.

With everything to play for there was a slight change to the line up in the doubles to allow Max Mobey to partner Luke, so Jed was allowed to go and celebrate his singles win and spoil his Dad on Father's Day!  A tight first set for Luke and Max saw them clinch the set 7-5 and Cirencester then failed to trouble them too much in the second which they won by 6-0.

Meanwhile Thomas and James had very close encounters with Cirencester's second pair with Lechlade coming out on top of a nailbiting tie break in the first and finally claiming victory 7-5 in the second giving Lechlade the overall win.

Again, a fantastic team effort by all of the boys and a great experience of playing on the clay!
